Presentation Title: A Dream Becomes Reality – My 2018 AT Thru Hike
Presentation Description: A description of my Appalachian Trail Thru Hike that started on March 15, 2018 and covered 2,190.9 miles across 14 States.. A record number of hikers started the hike, with a record number dropping out due to two Late Nor’easters; the final on April 16th. A record rainfall in the middle of the hike that led to issues with bugs. Finally record heat indexes over 100* in June and July with dry water sources.. Only around 20% of the hikers Summited Mt. Katahdin for the year. Yet, the Pilgrimage and Challenges of this trail, entice more and more people to to take this “Hike in the Woods” every year.. It is a Physical, Mental and Spiritual challenge that culminates with Touching a Worn Sign onto of Mt Katahdin. If I can turn this Dream into a reality, anyone can as well.
Greg “gbolt” Behrens spent thirty five year in education, twenty five as a Teacher and Athletic Trainer and then ten as an Assistant Principal for Northmont High School. Upon retiring he planned on completing a lifelong dream of Thru Hiking the Appalachian Trail through 14 states from Georgia to Maine. After a year of day hikes using mainly the Englewood, Taylorsville, and Germantown/Twin Creek Metro Parks, Greg departed Springer Mountain on March 15th, 2018. 171 days later “gbolt” (the trail name he utilized) summited Mt Katahdin, Maine successfully completing the 2,190.9 mile hike. Since returning home, Greg added another week long 125 mile “Metro Trek” Hike that supported the Five Rivers Metropark’s Levy.
