The benefits of the outdoors are not new. Participating in outdoor recreation activities improves wellbeing. Introducing art in the outdoors further enhances well-being. This presentation explores the powerful intersection of the arts and outdoor recreation programming, highlighting how creative experiences in nature can foster holistic well-being across all age groups. From children’s camps to college students, adults, and senior citizens, incorporating artistic activities such as painting, music, storytelling, and movement into outdoor settings and through participation in outdoor activities offers unique benefits that go beyond traditional recreation.
Key Benefits:
Mental and Emotional Well-Being: Engaging in art outdoors reduces stress, enhances mood, and promotes mindfulness by connecting individuals to nature and self-expression.
Physical Health: Activities like nature-inspired crafts or outdoor music-making encourage gentle movement and sensory engagement, supporting overall physical vitality.
Social Connection: Collaborative art projects build community, strengthen relationships, and foster inclusivity across diverse age groups.
Creative Development: Artistic exploration nurtures imagination and problem-solving skills, enriching personal growth and lifelong learning.
Accessibility for All Ages: Whether through simple crafts for kids, reflective journaling for college students, or therapeutic art for seniors, these programs can be tailored to meet developmental and mobility needs.
Connecting the arts in the outdoors furthermore serves as a bridge to participation and can create an environment in which all feel a sense of belonging.
Bio
I presented at the 2020 Adventure Summit on NatureRx and the benefits of being outdoors on Mental Health and at the 2024 Summit on Enhancing Group Dynamics through Leadership Roles.
I have also led several presentations on outdoor adventure programming and the connection to leadership and growth. I started the OLI (Outdoor Leadership Institute) at Baldwin Wallace in 2022 which takes concepts from personal and team growth and development utilizing the outdoors, challenge courses, NOLS leadership styles and fun outside to provide valuable skill development in communication, team building, critical thinking and problem-solving, resilience, and listening.
I have presented at several national and state workshops in Campus Recreation around various topics in Outdoor Adventure and recreation programming. I am in my 30th year at Baldwin Wallace University serving in the Community Arts School overseeing summer camps and ensembles. In my 29 year tenure at BW as the Associate Director of Campus Recreation Programming I served on several committees across campus to provide inclusive programming in the outdoors to our students, staff and the community. In my newest role, I have combined the outdoors with the arts to create experiences for our community, students and staff that are impactful to their overall wellbeing. I am passionate about providing accessible experiences in nature and guiding the growth and development of leaders of all ages. I love to hike, paddle and rock climb with my family and students.
