No Need for a Camper or Van-Car Camping in Your Vehicle, by Greg Behrens

February 10 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

Many have discovered the “Van Life” style of living; yet few realize that you can easily go “stealth” car camping in an SUV or even a Toyota Prius. While I am no expert, I have converted a 2010 Subaru Forester into a vehicle that I have parked at a trail head for a good night sleep and woken the next morning to do a major thru hike or weekend backpacking trip. I have recently traded in the Subaru for a more fuel efficient and climate controlled 2005 Toyota Prius that I am now converting to continue my journeys into the Great Outdoors. From “no build” to major conversions many SUV’s, Mini Vans and some cars can be utilized as traveling hotels with views of the great outdoors.

After 35 Years as an Educator, Greg Behrens retired and thru Hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2018. He returned to help a trail brother finish the Maine Section to Stratton in 2021 and Stratton to Katahdin for a 2nd Summit in 2023. Gbolt (His trail name) has also re-hiked the beginning of the Long Trail, the Shenandoah’s, hiked the Foothills Trail, Twin Valley Trail, Zaleski, Tar Hollow and Shawnee in Ohio and RRG in Ky. To ease his feet and help travel costs, he has converted a 2010 Subaru Forester into a shelter that he can sleep in for a night, a weekend or even possibly longer. One such trip was to the 2023Damascus Trail Days. This fall he traded in the Subaru for a 2005 Toyota Prius and is converting this vehicle for more adventures in the future. While no expert, he will share what he as learn so far to help others open their mind to the spirit of outdoor adventure travels in a new mode.
