Mark Rasch presents Van-Supported Southern Tier Bike Tour;
The Adventure Cycling Association Van-Supported Southern Tier Bike Tour is a 59 day cycling odyssey which originates in San Diego, California and ends in St. Augustine, Florida. The literal and figurative “ups and downs” of this trip will be discussed from the perspective of a 62-year old rider with minimal prior bike touring experience. Dozens of photos of representative scenery from this 3100 mile ride will be the backdrop for the talk. Preparations such as choosing gear, selecting a bike, training for the ride and getting the rider and his/her stuff to San Diego will be reviewed. Logistics are vitally important and the supported tour helps participants focus on riding their own ride. Pedaling over mountains, through deserts and on backroads and highways is challenging but can be intensely rewarding. Although the typical cross-country cyclist embarks on the tour for very personal reasons, the advantages of riding with a group and sharing experiences with other bucket-listers will be discussed.
